Dreaming of Burgers

I have literally been saying "Christmas is right around the corner" since September. I got an A+ for optimism back then. Now we really are on the cusp of vacationzzzzzz!

Living overseas is so awesome for so many things, but it also means you're away from most of the people you care about, so I am definitely excited to be coming home. Go time is less than two weeks away!

Our Christmas flights cost Blake and I an arm and a leg (honestly I think my limbs might be worth less than the ticket price), but at this point in time the thought of being reunited with my people while eating ALL the Canadian things is honestly priceless. Our flight paths are absolutely dreadful, but I'm trying not to think about that part.

To say I miss my people is an understatement.

I also miss Canadian food so much. In Botswana the food was really hearty, but these Korean dishes are not so hearty. Most of my cravings have been pretty typical. I dream of things like good chocolate, bacon, fuzzy peaches, wine, some timmy hoes, good indian/thai/sushi etc. I dream of my mother's steak and turkey dinner. But there are also some unexpected cravings for things like tzatziki, naan bread, and spinach.

The thing I dream about the most (like, every. single. day.) is a peanut butter burger from this gourmet burger place in Halifax. It sounds disgusting but it's the best thing in the world and I literally think about eating it allllllllll the time.

Blake and I talk about food a lot. Our chats often look like this:

One time, Rory (who is the most thoughtful human I ever met) sent me BACON JERKY in the mail. I didn't know such a thing existed until it miraculously appeared in my mailbox, and suffice it to say, IT WAS DELICIOUS. Here are the real-time messages chronicling my bacon reunion.

It was a highlight.

It could always be worse though.
At least I'm not Blake! (jk Blake don't be mad)
I love Blake, but he has a limited taste palate and a limited willingness to give new flavors a go. If you don't like fish and you're in Korea, it's a rough time. Here is a compilation of sad Blake lunches.

The cheese sandwiches have been a little out of hand.

If there is a deep fried meat that isn't fish, you can count on Blake to eat zillions of pieces.

We discovered this super weird but delicious chocolate mousse, which has gotten us through some of the more dire meals.

Bananas are a staple. And rice.

#sad.

Meal hall can be a challenge. But sometimes you just gotta go for it!
Take this concoction for example. Mayo, seaweed, tuna, egg, and rice. Questionable. But I was starving so I mixed it all together and dove in. And although it took my brain a moment to register, you know what it tasted like? It tasted EXACTLY like a tuna salad sandwich.

And you know, tuna salad sammies aren't so bad!

Blake didn't try the tuna mixture.

Anyway, he is doing just fine getting food in places that aren't the cafeteria, and hasn't withered away or anything stressful like that. No scurvy folks! We're doing great!

I AM EXCITED FOR THE HOLIDAYS.

If you are in Halifax over Christmas and you want to see me, you will be able to find me at Darryl's burger joint most days of the week.
